8th Grade Chemistry Focuses On the Elements that Make Up Our Foods!

Co-taught by Ms. King and Ms. Goodman, the students studied sugars, starches, and cellulose, building toward understanding carbohydrates. We also looked at proteins, fats, and oils. Through in class experiments and discussions, the students connected material covered to foods consumed, developing an explicit, science based understanding of what healthy nutrition looks like. Additionally, the class had an introduction to the periodic table of elements. All along the way we made foods including rock candy, challah bread, and butter, finding that chemistry is both dynamic and delicious!
