Pittsburgh Prison Book Project

Calling all alumni and WSP Middle School students and guardians! As part of our 30 Days of Gratitude on Day 18, Saturday, November 18, we have partnered with Thomas Merton Center and the Pittsburgh Prison Book Project (formerly called Book 'Em) to volunteer to pack books to be mailed to prisoners across Pennsylvania. PPBP is an all volunteer non-profit organization that was started right here in our neighborhood of Garfield.

WSP has committed to having a maximum of 12 volunteers pack books on November 18 from 1–3 pm. All volunteers must be in middle school or older. A donation of $20 per sign up will be used for mailing costs for the books. 

They welcome donations, even if you do not pack books! 

This is a great opportunity to share our values and gratitude for literacy and access to reading materials. We hope our community might support this project on an ongoing basis.

Some highlights about PPBP:

• Each month, Pgh Prison Book Project serves approximately 200 prisoners across 35 State and Federal prisons.
• They mail an average of 500 pieces of reading material a month.
• Since 2000 they have served approximately 40,000 people throughout the state of Pennsylvania.
• In 2019, they filled 2,234 individual requests from prisoners.
