Admissions Overview

The Waldorf School of Pittsburgh is an independent, not-for-profit school for children in preschool to fifth grade. The school admits qualified students from a range of abilities and backgrounds who can benefit from and enhance the program.

Admission is selective and depends upon space availability, age, and an assessment of the student’s physical, emotional and intellectual development and needs. Candidates for admission should apply by March 1, sending in both their application and the $50 application fee. Candidates applying after that date are considered if spaces are available. Following application in the nursery and kindergarten, the teacher will schedule an interview with the parents to speak more in depth about the child and about the curriculum. Children entering first grade can spend one day in the kindergarten and must be assessed for developmental readiness. For children in grades 2-5, school transcripts from the child’s previous school must be sent. The student is then invited into the class for a three-day visit.   A parent/teacher interview follows this visit. Once the child has been accepted into the class, the parent will receive a request for a non-refundable $200 tuition deposit to hold the spot in the class.

Choosing Waldorf Education

We understand that choosing a school is one of the biggest decisions you will make for your children. This decision involves many steps – asking questions, reading, talking to current and alumni parents, touring the facility and meeting the teachers. We offer personal tours throughout the year on an appointment basis. We also hold our unique Open Classrooms each month.   This is a time for prospective parents to spend a morning at the school, visiting four classes from preschool through grade 5. We also hold a Welcome to Waldorf presentation twice a year on a Saturday morning. This informal gathering is a time to tour the school and hear a brief overview of our curriculum.

In addition, there are several other community events that are open to the community: Winter Fair, May Fair, and the Alumni Tea. These are excellent times to see the school and meet some of the other parents and students in a festive atmosphere.

Scholarships

Tuition is kept as low as possible. To ensure that the student body selection is not limited by economic background, the Waldorf School of Pittsburgh offers scholarships to families who demonstrate need. Please contact the school to obtain a copy of the scholarship application.

Obligations of enrolled parents

The involvement of all parents is necessary to maintain the health and stability of the school. Parents are expected to share their collective talents in areas such as committee work, maintaining the beauty of the building and gardens, and major fundraising events. Each family is required to do a proscribed amount of service per year. In addition, they are to be in agreement and support of the school’s philosophy. To this end, parents are asked to attend all parent/teacher conferences, parent evenings, class meetings and other educational offerings in order to deepen their understanding of the education their children are receiving. Parents support the teacher’s work at school by assuring that their children have regular meals and bedtimes, adequate sleep and nutrition and limited exposure to electronic media.

Media Policy

Watching television and videos and playing computer games, regardless of their content, inhibits children’s innate capacity to form their own inner pictures, an ability crucial for creative thinking and problem solving. Limiting the exposure to electronic media has been shown to improve open-minded concentration and social stability in the classroom. Therefore, the Waldorf School of Pittsburgh asks parents to restrict television and computer use at home.
